Refrigerated trailer vs. reefer truck vs. portable walk-in: which do you need?
Quick answer
For events, restaurants, farms and emergencies, a small towable refrigerated trailer is usually the simplest choice. It parks in roughly the space of one or two cars, runs on electricity and can refrigerate or freeze. A 53-foot semi reefer suits warehouse-scale volume with room for a tractor-trailer. A portable walk-in is assembled on site for long installations. Ice and coolers only work for a few hours.
The options side by side
| Option | Best for | Space and access | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Towable refrigerated trailer 7’×12’, 7’×14’ or 7’×16’ | Weddings and events, restaurant emergencies, remodels, farms, hunting camps, storms | Roughly one or two parking spaces, plus room to back it in | Refrigerate or freeze; delivered and picked up; flexible rental length |
| 53-foot semi reefer | Warehouse-scale volume, large distributors | A big lot with room for a tractor-trailer, often a loading dock or ramp | Huge capacity that most events and restaurants don’t need |
| Portable walk-in cooler | Long-term installations | A flat pad; panels assembled on site | More setup time; built to stay put |
| Ice and coolers | A few hours, a small crowd | Anywhere | Constant ice runs; warms quickly in Georgia heat |
When a towable trailer is the right call
- You need cold storage at a place without a loading dock: a barn venue, a backyard, a community center lot, a farm
- You need it fast: a walk-in cooler failed or a storm is coming
- Your needs fit within one walk-in cooler or a bit more
- You might need frozen storage as well as cold
Which trailer size?
Our size guide walks through it. In short, a 7’×12’ covers small events and single walk-in emergencies, a 7’×14’ handles larger events and extra capacity, and a 7’×16’ handles high-volume storage.

Is a refrigerated trailer the same as a reefer?
“Reefer” usually means a large refrigerated semi-trailer pulled by a tractor. Small towable refrigerated trailers like ours do the same job at a much smaller scale and fit where a semi can’t.
How much space does a refrigerated trailer need?
Our trailers are 7 feet wide and 12 to 16 feet long, roughly one or two parking spaces, plus room for our truck to back it in.
Can a towable trailer freeze?
Yes. Every one of our trailers can run as a refrigerator or a freezer.
