Hurricane prep for restaurants and food businesses
Quick answer
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 (NOAA). The food businesses that lose the least have a plan before a storm is named: who to call for backup cold storage, where a trailer will park, how it will get power, and how they’ll track temperatures.
Before the season
- Save our number: (404) 418-8290. When a storm is forecast, cold storage gets booked up fast.
- Pick a trailer spot on high, level ground our truck can reach.
- Plan power: a generator sized for your needs, or a partner site with service.
- Keep thermometers and a temperature log with your storm supplies.
When a storm is coming
- Call early to line up a trailer.
- Run coolers and freezers cold and keep them full; a full freezer holds temperature longer.
- Decide what moves to the trailer first: the most perishable and most valuable product.
After the storm
Check and log temperatures before you decide what to keep. Food at 40°F or warmer for two hours or more should be thrown out (Ready.gov). If the power will be out for days, move what you can save into a cold trailer and keep it running on a generator or at a site with power.
